As a first time mom, it’s hard to know what you’ll need after you give birth. I lived through this when I had my daughter in 2018. From my experience and hearing experiences from my family and friends, here are the top postpartum items you’ll need to help you recover faster.
Here are my top postpartum must-haves that I recommend all my friends and family.
MomWasher by Fridababy
The MomWasher is an upgraded version of the peri bottle you’ll receive at the hospital. This bottle allows you to spray at any angles that are hard to reach, which is especially helpful when you have tore from a vaginal birth.
You’ll want to fill it up with lukewarm water prior to using. I typically used the entire bottle every time I used the restroom, because using a bottle with ice cold water wasn’t pleasant for me.
Tip: If you have multiple bathrooms in your home, you may want to consider getting multiples bottles.
Dermoplast Pain Relieving Spray
The Dermoplast pain relieving spray will be your best friend after giving birth. The hospital I delivered at did provide one can of this, but I had a third degree tear and needed it when I arrived home. I would use this anytime I felt like I needed it, and it help heal without the pain.
Maternity Overnight Maxi Pads
If your hospital didn’t provide ample pads for you to go home with, you’ll need to have pads at home. Most women will have to change out the pad every 3 to 5 hours from the postpartum bleeding, as known as lochia. The heavy bleeding can last up to 10 days, with light bleeding lasting up to six weeks. These pads are great since they have the maximum absorption and they have wings.
Tucks Medicated Cooling Pads
Along with your Maxi pads, these are essential when recovering from child birth. I was instructed to use these every time I changed my pad. I would place three pads of the Tucks Medicated cooling pads onto the maxi pad and apply a dollop of the hemorrhoid cream.
Hemorrhoid Cream
This hemorrhoid cream will provide extra comfort and aid in healing postpartum.
Instant Ice Maxi Pads
If the Tucks + Hemorrhoid cream wasn’t cooling enough, these instant ice packs will help relieve the pain.
Stool Softener
A stool softener is a must! The first time going number two is a daunting task and can be very painful – unless you are prepared. Taking a softener will help alleviate the pain and will help the process go smoothly.
Prune Juice
If taking a stool softener is not your thing, drinking prune juice is a great alternative.
Nipple cream
Lanolin is a thick cream that helps soothes and protect sore nipples from breastfeeding and pumping. I personally love to use this a lip balm as well.
Tip: This cream is very thick and can cause oil stains on clothing. A nursing pad is recommended while using this cream.
Reusable Nursing Pads
These reusable nursing pads are awesome, plus you can throw them in the wash and keep reusing them!
Disposable Nursing Pads
These disposal nursing pads are the best in the market as of now for the price. These were great when I didn’t have any of the reusable ones to use.
Belly Wrap
I got this belly wrap about three weeks postpartum, but I wished I had it at the hospital. After delivering, your body just feels “loose”. After wearing this wrap for a good six weeks, I felt more put together.
Prenatal Vitamins
Surprise! You still need to take a Pre/Post Natal vitamin if you’re planning on breastfeeding. I still take this one since it’s gentle on my stomach and doesn’t give a fishy after taste. Since it’s a soft gel, it’s easy to swallow.
Nursing Bra
This is hands down the softest nursing/sleeping bra you will want once you start nursing or pumping. This is made out of french terry and is extremely soft. This brand caters to a wide variety of sizes, which is helpful since you fluctuate in bra size as you are nursing/pumping.
Lactation Massager
This is a very handy device that helps massage your breasts as you are pumping. It’s especially helpful if you have a clog that you are trying to work out. It has multiple massage settings that helpful in different situations.
Silicone Manual Breast Pump/ Milk Saver
This is marketed as a manual breast pump, but I would classify it as a milk saver. Essentially, you can place this on your opposite breast while you are feeding your baby on the other breast, and this can collect milk when you are having a letdown.
Mini Fridge
A mini fridge is a life saver, especially if you have a two-story home or if your kitchen is far from your bedroom. After pumping milk in the middle of the night, I was able to place everything in the fridge and get some much needed sleep.
